Program wins Department of Defense’s golden nugget award

BT Federal has been an important IT partner for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (COE) for over 15 years. BT Federal built a three-tiered solution that encompassed delivery-system hardware, specialized applications software, and networking - a solution that has ultimately saved the agency millions of dollars of taxpayers' money.

BT installed three-tier UNIX servers and workstations throughout the agency's operations. The first level in the agency's infrastructure includes workstations used by engineers. The next tier deploys departmental servers within district and divisional offices. And, the third tier includes high-end systems installed at two processing centers. In addition, BTdeployed a worldwide, high-speed network based on TCP/IP to connect all 60 sites where the agency's 40,000 civilian and military employees work. In addition to the WAN, all email traffic (approximately 150,000 daily messages) is processed through BT Federal’s messaging technology.

With their stated mission to provide engineering services both in planned and disaster response situations, an up-to-date and reliable network is a particularly critical tool for the COE. Working closely with the Corps, BT Federal developed and implemented the WAN’s management methodology and processes and established a central network management organization dedicated to keeping the WAN operating continuously and efficiently. This organization overseas the development and operating of troubleshooting procedures and configuration standards for connecting backbone devices, cost tracking, and technology insertions. The WAN carries traffic critical to the real-time performance of the Corps’ mission and guarantees 100% uptime.

Several layers of firewall are implemented at key access points to the WAN providing secured access to sensitive data. BT Federal developed Information Assurance Policies and Procedures for network security and implemented the Corps Information Assurance and Vulnerability Assessment Program.

As the prime contractor, BT Federal deployed hardware, software, hardware maintenance, software support, installation support, networking, transition support, training, program management, and analyst consulting services for operating systems, databases, LAN, WAN, and application support. Today, BT Federal continues to provide on-site consulting services at district office like Nashville and Kansas City, as well as at COE headquarters in Washington DC.
