When the head of the Department of Transportation needed to send email to all DOT employees, BT Federal was contracted to provide reliable and efficient messaging services between all divisions of the DOT. The large size of the organization and the large number of different mail systems demanded a system that was flexible, scalable, high performance, and capable of high availability. A decade later, BT Federal’s enterprise messaging system is still at the core of DOT’s messaging environment.

DOT’s problem consisted of 110,000 employees in 14 agencies. At this time, 14 different email systems were interconnected by 16 gateways. Instead of replacing systems, BT Federal’s enterprise messaging solution allowed DOT to leverage its existing investment in departmental email systems. The messaging and directory backbone developed by BT Federal delivered a coordinated, seamlessly integrated solution with minimal disruption to the users. The solution provided an enterprise directory that enabled all DOT users to communicate easily.

The solution delivered transparent and uniform addressing for ease of use, graphical management tools for monitoring, and seamless message interchange across the disparate email systems. Since the original installation, the DOT has added other elements to its central directory – data from the Human Resources database, the DOT telephone directory, and public keys to facilitate secure messaging. Controlled access to the directory via the web provides needed information in a highly accessible means.

BT Federal provided the expertise to perform integration, customization, administrator training, and ongoing software support. DOT’s communications were improved throughout all its 14 divisions (modes).
