Corps of Engineers adds anti-spam to existing email solution
2004-02-17

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Portland, Oregon has purchased the Brightmail anti-spam solution from BT Syntegra.  Throughout the Corps, users were being deluged with spam - this unwanted mail was forcing each end user to deal with this issue within their own inbox while consuming a large percentage of the mail administration staff, bandwidth and storage.  BT Syntegra's enterprise pilot uncovered that 25% of the email being received during the business day was spam.  Brightmail's high affectivity rate and very low false positive rate made Brightmail the front runner for an anti-spam solution.  Brightmail is integrated with BT Syntegra's eMail Sentinel to enhance the boundary messaging services that provides message filtering and anti-virus services.

The New NHS National Network
2004-02

BT was awarded a seven year contract worth £530 million to provide and manage an integrated broadband network, known as the New National Network, linking all NHS organizations in England.  BT will source network connections from a range of network providers who have competed on price and value, and will be responsible for the end-to-end integration of the network and the overall service it provides.  This will make the NHS the first major user of significant broadband capacity in the public sector in the UK.

The infrastructure will deliver the vital NHS Care Records Service to clinicians and medical practitioners, connecting the Local Service Provider (LSP) regional IT networks into one standarized system, which will benefit both patients and medical staff.

Using high-speed broadband connectivity, the New National Network will support one of the largest intranets in Europe, catering for the huge data flow within the NHS.  It will not only save costs, but the compatibility of the systems will deliver efficiencies to directly benefit patients.

The increased bandwidth will open up a host of new opportunities to the 18,000 NHS sites in England. GP surgeries, primary care trusts, and hospitals will benefit from faster, secure access and the ability to share and view large data files, patient records, video links, and visual materials, such as x-rays.  This will enable greater cooperation between different parts of the NHS and faster, more effcient patient treatment.

The network will also be designed for future expansion, so that over time other healthcare professionals, including dentists, pharmacists, opticians, and social services, will be able to access the network.

NHS Care Records Service Contract
2003-12

BT will design, deliver, and operate integrated computer and communication systems for the entire care community in London. This ten year, £1.616 million award will be known as the NHS Care Records Service (NHS CRS).

When fully implemented, the NHS CRS will enable NHS organizations in the London region to record and exchange detailed patient and care informaiton electronically, eliminating duplication of patient files and improving information sharing between healthcare professionals.  As well as enabling better-informed clinical decisions, it will also make possible the identification of patients at risk and proactive, preventative care through targeted screening programs.

BT will also design, deliver, and manage a nationally-accessible patient record database and transactional messaging service.  The database will hold electronic summary patient records for the entire nation.  These secure records will be shared across the country with clinicians and medical practitioners dependent on their access authority.  Patients will no longer be required to repeat information about their medical history at different stages of the care process because the right information about a patient will be in the right place at the right time.

The database will extract key summary information from the NHS CRS for London and the four other care regions in the UK so that it can be shared nationally as required.  In addition, it will enable the electronic transfer of prescriptions and the continued monitoring of prescriptions being issued as well as the introduction of electronic appointment booking in the summer of 2004.
